Identifying differences between Align's TRex 500 Revisions

How can you tell the differences between Align's T-Rex 500 products? The key is in the main frame. Each generation and version has its own signature layout, mounting geometry, and structural cutouts. By reviewing and comparing these distinct frame characteristics against your model, you can quickly and accurately identify which generation you have on your workbench.

Why were there so many variations?:

Across the lifecycle of the T-Rex 500, Align periodically overhauled the carbon side plates to match advances in flight performance and electronics. Early flybar models like the ESP rely on wider, molded main frames designed around mechanical linkages. The EFL Pro brought a noticeably narrower profile and direct-to-swash servo mounting, while the 500L Dominator introduced composite frame stiffeners with dedicated battery slide-in rails. The latest 500X complete redesign stretches the frame entirely for larger disc blades and upper motor mount geometry.

T-Rex 500ESP (2008)

Replaced the original 2007 500CF/GF with aluminum bearing blocks and torque-tube tail drive

The T-Rex 500ESP (Electronic Super Pro) represents the classic flybar era of the 500-size series. It features a torque-tube tail drive system, metal main rotor head assembly with a mechanical flybar, and a molded plastic frame structure with integrated bearing blocks. Designed primarily for standard 425mm main blades, it relies on traditional mechanical stabilization rather than electronic flybarless units.

T-Rex 500EFL (2011)

Align’s first dedicated flybarless 500 platform featuring direct-to-swash linkages

The T-Rex 500EFL Pro marked Align's transition into dedicated Flybarless (FL) designs with a revamped, narrower carbon fiber frame layout. By removing the flybar cage and lowering the rotor head center of gravity, it significantly reduced mechanical drag and improved 3D agility. The EFL Pro utilizes direct-to-swash servo linkages, a unified motor mount block that acts as a frame stiffener, and a high-voltage electronic stabilization setup.

T-Rex 500L (2014)

Introduced composite side frames, battery tray slide system, and red-anodized hardware

The T-Rex 500L Dominator introduced Align's side-frame reinforcement system with integrated battery slide-in tracks, making lipo changes fast without removing the canopy. It features the FL flybarless rotor head, updated red-anodized aluminum frame braces, high-torque brushless servos, and an updated power system tailored for higher discharge 6S setups.

T-Rex 500X (2016)

Legacy T-Rex 500 (ESP, EFL Pro, 500L): Ran 425mm main blades with ~70mm–73mm tail blades. So this model was stretched to 470mm blades, forward-slanted landing gear, and belt-drive tail option

The T-Rex 500X is a complete ground-up redesign that stretched the airframe to run 470mm main blades, shifting the model closer to a true 500-class disc size. Key upgrades include a landing gear layout angled forward for ground stance stability, a composite material side-frame integration, a direct-drive belt-driven tail option alongside torque-tube configurations, and a ultra-low CG rotor head design for high-rate 3D maneuvers.
