How to Bind ExpressLRS Using a Binding Phrase

ExpressLRS (ELRS) offers multiple ways to bind a receiver to a transmitter module. Traditionally, pilots use the “three‑power‑cycle” bind method or hold the receiver’s boot button while powering it on. But ELRS also supports a binding phrase—a shared password that allows the transmitter module and receiver to automatically bind without entering bind mode manually.

Using a binding phrase is faster, more convenient, and ideal for pilots who frequently swap receivers or maintain multiple aircraft. This guide walks you through the entire process using a Commando 8 radio for demonstration, but the steps apply to any ELRS‑compatible transmitter module and receiver.

Why Use a Binding Phrase?

Step‑by‑Step Guide

1. Put the TX Module Into Wi‑Fi Mode

  1. On the Commando 8, short‑press the left 5‑way menu button to open the system menu.
  2. Select ExpressLRS and confirm with the right button.
  3. Scroll to Wi‑Fi Connectivity and enter the submenu.
  4. Select Enable Wi‑Fi and confirm.
  5. The TX module will now enter Wi‑Fi mode.
  6. On your phone/tablet/computer, open Wi‑Fi settings and connect to:
    ExpressLRS TX
  7. Enter the password:
    expresslrs (lowercase)
  8. Your device should auto‑open the ELRS web interface. If not, manually enter:
    10.0.0.1

2. Set the Binding Phrase on the TX Module

  1. In the ELRS web interface, open the Options menu.
  2. Find the Binding Phrase field.
  3. Enter your desired phrase, e.g.:
    iflight666
  4. Scroll down and click Save.
  5. Click Reboot to apply the changes.

3. Put the Receiver Into Wi‑Fi Mode

  1. Power the aircraft using a battery.
  2. Use tweezers or a tool to long‑press the receiver’s boot button for ~2 seconds.
  3. The LED will begin blinking rapidly—this indicates Wi‑Fi mode.
  4. On your device, connect to:
    ExpressLRS RX
  5. Enter the password:
    expresslrs
  6. If you’ve connected before, your device may remember the password.

4. Set the Binding Phrase on the Receiver

  1. After connecting, navigate to the ELRS receiver settings page.
  2. Open the Options menu.
  3. Find the Binding Phrase field.
  4. Enter the same phrase used on the TX module:
    iflight666
  5. Click Save.
  6. Click Reboot to apply the settings.

5. Automatic Binding

Once both devices share the same binding phrase:
