The Whip

General

This is a generic aerobatic maneuver mainly intended for RC Helicopters. It is used as a major component to some other manuevers or as a complimentary maneuver in some cases. This maneuver is also an introduction to "PIROFLIPS". Please see "WHAT IT TEACHES" sub-section below.

Description

Generally done in profile orientation. The beginning method for this maneuver are to increase throttle/pitch while feeding forward elevator. At the vertical point, pause the throttle/pitch as well as the elevator input and rotate the tail with a rudder to turn the tail 180 deg. now continue the collective feed but this time pull "back" elevator.

Pre-requisites

  • Roll
  • Flip
  • 180 Piroutte (upright)
  • 360 Piroutte (upright)
  • 180 Piroutte (inverted)
  • 360 Piroutte (inverted)

What it teaches

  • Pre-requisite "stir" for piroflip
  • Mentally prep student for reversing collective inputs mid-stream
  • Fast/quick piroutte input timing - forces student to learn how to quickly "about face" with only a short amount of time (before the heli starts to fall due to gravity) since the piroutte is done while "knife-edge"
  • Allows new students to familiarize with inverted "catches"
