Decoupling SAFE Mode on the Blade 230 S Series Helis
<< Back
|
For beginner collective pitch pilots, the Blade 230 S platform—including the 230 S V2 and 230 Smart—is one of the best training aircraft available. However, the default manufacturer Spektrum transmitter setups tie SAFE (Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope) Mode directly to the main Flight Mode switch (Switch B).
In the factory configuration, Normal Mode forces self-leveling on, while Idle Up 1 (Stunt 1) and Idle Up 2 (Stunt 2) completely disable it. This setup creates a significant training hurdle: students cannot practice flying with a flat, continuous pitch and throttle curve while keeping self-leveling engaged as a safety net, nor can they turn SAFE off in Normal mode without switching motor speeds.
By remapping the flight control channels in your Spektrum AirWare transmitter, you can fully decouple SAFE auto-leveling from your head speed modes and assign it to a dedicated toggle (such as Switch A or Switch H).
Why Decouple SAFE Mode?
- Independent Throttle & Pitch Control: Allows students to run a constant head speed (Idle 1) while maintaining self-leveling for orientation stability.
- Seamless Transitioning: Enables the pilot to toggle self-leveling ON or OFF on demand across any flight mode without sudden jumps in head speed or collective response.
- Improved Muscle Memory: Keeps emergency rescue or stabilization controls consistent across all model profiles.
Default Channel Mapping vs. Decoupled Mapping
| Channel / Function |
Factory Default Setup |
Decoupled Custom Setup |
| Flight Mode (Switch B) |
Controls Head Speed, Pitch Curve, AND SAFE Mode state |
Controls Head Speed and Pitch Curve ONLY |
| Aux 2 (Channel 7) |
Bound internally to Flight Mode Switch |
Assigned to Independent Switch (e.g., Switch A) |
| SAFE Behavior |
Active in Normal; Disabled in Idle 1 & Idle 2 |
Toggleable ON/OFF regardless of motor speed |
Note: Spektrum flybarless receiver systems read the Aux 2 channel to determine the active stability mode state (+100% for Self-Level/SAFE, 0% or -100% for Agility/Intermediate/3D).
Step-by-Step Programming Guide
Follow these steps on your Spektrum transmitter (DX6, DX8, DX9, NX, or iX series) to assign SAFE mode to an independent switch.
- Enter System Setup: Turn on your transmitter, press and hold the scroll wheel, and select System Setup (or access it via the System Settings menu on NX/iX radios). Ensure the helicopter is powered OFF during programming.
- Open Channel Assign: Scroll down and select Channel Assign (or Channel Input Config).
- Access Rx Port Assignments: Verify that standard channels 1 through 6 remain set to default (Throttle, Aileron, Elevator, Rudder, Pitch, Gyro/Aux1). Select NEXT at the bottom right to enter the Channel Input Config screen.
- Reassign Aux 2:
- Locate
7 Aux2: in the input list. By default, it will likely show F.Mode or Switch B.
- Highlight
Aux2, click the scroll wheel, and toggle your desired physical switch (e.g., Switch A or Switch H) to assign it.
- Verify Switch Directions:
- Exit to the main screen and enter the Monitor menu.
- Flip your selected switch and monitor the movement of AX2.
- Adjust your travel or reversing settings for Aux 2 if necessary, so that position 0 provides high input (+100% for SAFE ON) and position 1/2 provides low input (-100% for SAFE OFF).
- Confirm Flight Mode Operation: Cycle Switch B. Ensure your throttle and pitch curves switch between Normal, Idle 1, and Idle 2 without changing the state of the
AX2 bar on the monitor screen.
Pre-Flight Safety Check: Before bench testing with a live battery, remove the main motor leads or main/tail blades. Power on the model, place it on a level surface, and toggle your new SAFE switch to verify that the swashplate compensates correctly when tilting the frame by hand.
